Intraurban Housing Mobility in a Traditional West African City: Shelter or Business Decision?

Abstract: The use of housing for income generation through informal-sector activities is widespread in urban areas of developing countries. Most households consider their shelter needs when making housing choices. For households that use their dwellings for income generation, housing choices are also business decisions. Using data from a 596-household survey collected in 1996 in Kumasi, Ghana, logistic regression is used to examine the determinants of intraurban moves. Households using their home for income generation are significantly less likely to move.
