Abstract: The objetive of this paper is to show the main development in the specilized literature on poverty related to the seminal work of Amartya Sen in aggregate measures of poverty. After reviewing the principal contributions on the subject, the text uses empirical data from Brazil to illustrate the application of the best known indices of poverty.
