Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to describe an empirical decomposition technique. Since this technique is not based on a model but on an identify, it allows the separation of empirical investigation from a priori theoretical considerations. In particular, it makes possible to organize the empirical evidence of a given phenomenon without imposing a theoretical structure. The paper illustrates with a series of examples situations where the decomposition technique revels certain aspects that facilities the understanding of the economic problem at hard. The paper argues that the potential contribution of decomposition techniques in the economic literature has been systematically underestimated.
