Abstract: There have been several estimations for an import demand equation in Brazil. All the authors have used annual data, in the absence of information for output on a quarterly basis in this paper we have used an output series recently calculated by Modiano and Lopes (1985) to estimate an import demand equation for the period 1976.I - 1984.IV. We attempted to capture import rationing by including net reserves/ external debt as ao explicative variable in our regressions. The estimatives obtained are reported in Section 2. In Section 3 we present some progressions for the evolution of the import volume munder different assumptions on the output rate of growth.
