Changes in the relationships of education with other elements of society are the results of the conflicts witnessed during the colonial rule With this perspective the developments in the educational field in old Mysore under the direct and indirect rule of the British and in Karnataka during the post-independence period. are analysed in thts paper The paper concludes that the changes in the control over education and in its internal processes were negotiated in such a way that while education served the new political and economic interests. it managed to maintain the status quo in social stratification
