Early Education Experiments: The Role of Religious Institutions and Other Private Agencies

Abstract: This paper presents a historical analysis of laudable efforts made by nonofficial or private agencies for the development of education in Karnataka before Independence These agencies included mainly the Christian missionaries. Veerashaiva mathas and private education Societies. The paper discusses how their efforts helped to strengthen the modern system of education, which in the post-Independence period, however. led to commercialisation of education at all stages.
