In the article various approaches to concept and essence of the criminal punishment, developed by the Russian lawyers in theXIXth – the beginning of XXth centuries are analysed. In this connection the various points of view on the put problem are systematizedand generalizing conclusions on understanding of criminal punishment during the considered period of development of Russian legalthought are drawn.
