Abstract: The paper investigates the Chinese approach to ownership system transformation and identifies major development trends in the China's ownership structure during the 1990s. The authors suggest a classification of Chinese enterprises by ownership type with a focus on their legal status. Evolution of the state, collective, private and foreign sectors, as well as contribution of each sector to overall economic growth are considered. State owned enterprises reformation, the key point of economic modernization in China, is highlighted. The authors argue that a smooth transition of China from the planned to the market economy characterized by highly positive economic dynamics can be to a large extent attributed to gradualism in ownership system reorganization.
