Abstract: The author gives a short review about the manifold changes the East German economy and the society has undergone in the last 14 years. The paper illustrates the problems and challenges of integrating the probably most efficient «socialist» economy into one of the most advanced market economies. Despite of all efforts, enormous financial west-east transfers and some but few excellent working firms, today only 2/3 of the efficiency of the West German industry has been reached by the East German economy. In East Germany people and politicians only begin to understand that they have to communicate their own advantages, peculiarities and values better to enrich Germany and perhaps Europe.
