Abstract: Although the fact that West Germany's economic order and economic policy Iiave been decisively influenced by ordoliberal thought has been sufficiently documented by academic research, relatively little is known about the early years of the Freiburg School of economics before the end of World War II. The authors trace the development of ordoliberal thought on the background of contemporary German economics and show, how tight the connection between the members of the Freiburg school and the resistance against Hitler was. From this historical perspective, the authors shed light on the religious and moral convictions that form the foundation of the ordoliberal doctrine. The policy recommendations of the Freiburg school, the authors argue, can only be properly understood if this historical and philosophical background is taken into account.
