Abstract: The article examines the main reasons for the existence of private and public sector in an economy, shows the problems which appear due to this fact, provides different views on the subject from various schools of economic science. Based on the data, the author identifies the functions of both patterns of ownership and makes a conclusion on their role in the economy.
