NEW SHIPPING TRENDS

Fernando González Laxe

Revista Galega de Economía, 2008, vol. 17, issue 1

Abstract: This paper analyses the trends of international maritime transport, that is, strong traffic specialization, choice of routes and greater port hierarchy. Containerization and the increasing number of carried goods fostered business concentration in this activity. Our analysis highlights the main trends. Firstly, it deals with the new role of shipping lines, which strengthen the control of transports and routes by means of mergers and alliances. Secondly, we consider the role of port operators, in charge of managing the port calls in those ports located in the oceanic routes with more density and traffic. Thirdly, the paper analyses inter operational capability and the creation of logistic platforms, which interconnect the different means of transport, streng-thening the paper played by shipping lines and port operators from an economic and territorial perspective. Finally, the author mentions the interconnection of economic spaces and the new intermediation of supply and demand in maritime transport, by means of the spread of new ser-vices, which have meant a new spatial readjustment in the configuration of shipping networks.
