Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of different aspects related to the fishing capacity and the effects of the development of the European fishing fleet through the application of sustainability index. The results suggest a global reduction of the fishing fleet but with asimetric trends among the countries and segments analised. Also, we found a positive relation between the evolution of the European fisheries fleet and its exploitation pattens within all fishing grounds around the world. Finally, the application of sustainability index allowed us to measure the loss of biodiversity of the marine ecoystems in the European community. The results suggest strong changes of the relative abundance of the ecosystems and the unsustainability of the common fisheries policy.
