Abstract:
This paper offers an in-depth review of Galician production and employment macroaggregates since 1986, when it became an EEC member. As a whole, the balance shows a fairly average performance. With respect to the Spanish average, per capita GDP has slightly improved due to a shrinking population share. Regarding the EU-15 average, results are better. Both the demographic crisis and the asymmetric Spanish economic boom between 1995 and 2007 have fuelled convergence. The paper also analyzes the relationship between GDP growth and sustainable development.
