GALICIAN IN THE EUROPEAN UNION. AN EMERGENT ECONOMY

Abstract: The entrance in the European Community responded to the unequivocal European reality of Galicia. But, if the entry was necessary, the Galician concerns were not considered by the Spanish Government, conceiving itself as a Mediterranean State. Despite the Statute of Autonomy recognizing Galicia as a nationality, the autonomous elected institutions did not have a national project, nor held firm positions on the conditions of the entry. The Galician society suffered the consequences, particulary demographical, of the absence of a single State, but its response during the years of presence in the Union was extraordinary. Forced into making a tough transformation, the Galician society was the protagonist of an exceptional change. Today it has a powerful productive structure. Its character changed from agricultural and rural to industrial and urban, without detriment to the highlighted function of agriculture and fishing. The economy of the country is capable to face the world and Galiza is better prepared for an open and independent life.
