GALICIA: THE TRANSITION TO AN URBAN SOCIETY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

Abstract: We speak about to the recent transit of a Galician rural to the urban region today, with an evolution of the urbanization rate higher than the European average, and may therefore speak of a convergence of urban Galicia with Europe. We have compiled a database of the seven urban areas developed around the main Galician cities, using as criteria for delimitation of those areas which are seen mostly in different European countries for demonstrate the convergence of urban Galicia. This definition allows studying the distribution of population growth in each of the seven cities of Galicia, distribution of production and process tertiarization of its urban economy, highlighting its openness to the outside world, mainly in the fields business, tourism and cultural, joining the more developed regions, along the lines postindustrial city. It also examines the growth of the Galician cities in the context of medium-sized cities in Europe, warned of a shortfall size in relation to its competitiveness, whose cause lies in the structure of the polycentric urban network in regional and historical process of alternating leadership urban. To achieve more competitive dimensions are proposed several strategies territorial grouping, such as the creation of Eurocities around port-cities where there are complementarities between functional.
