THE ROLE OF PUBLIC INDUSTRIAL ENTERPRISES IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Revista Galega de Economía, 2009, vol. 18, issue 1
Abstract:
Public enterprises can play an important role contributing to the economic, technological and social development of certain regions. In this article we study the Spanish case. For this purpose we analyse the action of the National Institute of Industry. We assert that the public enterprise did not comply with its role as it did not reduce regional differences. Decisions about the geographical localization of productive activities, especially R&D ones, are strongly linked to the role of public enterprises in the development of the most economically-challenged regions.
