Abstract:
In recent years the tourism related to the university exchange programs is becoming more important as a new type of tourism. However there is some confusion concerning its conceptualization. In this paper the term of “academic tourism” is proposed to describe this tourist activity, and it is aimed to estimate the direct economic impact of the Erasmus students received by the University of Santiago de Compostela during the academic year 2007-2008. The results of the study reveal that this kind of tourism shows longer duration of stay comparing to the conventional tourism, it also generates additional visits of relatives and friends and the study shows a tourist with high level of satisfaction with both the city and the University who, as a result, expresses the wish to repeat the visit in the future. These characteristics should be considered by agents connected to tourism sector in their decision making process and for better adjusting of the supply to this increasing demand.
