THE DEVELOPMENT OF RENEWABLE ENERGIES IN GALICIA, 1980-2008. ENGASA, AN OUTSTANDING REFERENCE OF THE SECTOR

Abstract: The energy crisis of the 1970s led to a reformulation of the prevailing energy paradigm. As a result, renewable energies began to thrive as strategic alternatives. Historically, Galicia had played an outstanding role as a provider of hydroelectric power, due to the favourable resource endowment it has. But the outbreak of the crisis strengthened its role in the field of renewable energies, particularly in the construction of small hydroelectric power stations and wind farms. In subsequent years, energies such as biomass or solar energy have begun to be exploited, although they are still fledgling. The article aims to provide an overview of the development of renewable energies in Galicia during the last three decades. The regional hydropower potential has been complemented with the development of wind power, an expanding segment in which native companies such as Engasa (1981), which is one of the pioneers in harnessing wind energy, play a certain role.
