Abstract:
Companies and organizations are a key factor for sustainable development. Environmental management is an essential tool in this task, being also useful for environmental differentiation of organizations and their products. Business environmental management needs robust environmental indicators. Corporate carbon footprints (CCF) are one of the most popular environmental indicators. This paper remarks the role of supply chains in environmental management, in order to achieve environmental benefits from cooperation among chain members. Secondly, the compound method composed of financial statements (MC3), a methodological alternative for assessing CCF in a supply chain framework is introduced. MC3 provides useful information for environmental labeling of products. The case study shows the relevance of environmental management with supply chains, including some obtainable results with the MC3. Results from the study also show that the production of canned mussels generates 10.75 tCO2/ton of product, mainly from the canning process company.
