GENDER AND LABOUR MARKET IN GALICIA: ANALYSIS OF EQUITY THROUGH SYNTHETIC INDICATORS

Irene Riobóo Lestón and Carolina Martín López

Revista Galega de Economía, 2011, vol. 20, issue ex

Abstract: The study of gender inequalities has been an area of great interest in economic analysis in recent years, so it has become necessary to have measures that allow their quantification. Among the diverse possibilities existing, we can highlight the use of synthetic indicators due to they make feasible to consider the several dimensions that underlie the complex concept of gender equity. In this work we have focused on measuring the level of equality or inequality in the labour market in Galicia and Spain by obtaining a synthetic index –Gender Inequality in Labour Market (GILM)–, which quantifies the gender gaps allowing a temporal comparison in both geographical areas. This indicator has been obtained for the period 2001-2010, following the methodological guidelines provided by the OECD and the JRC to obtain composite indicators, and based on data from the main sources of employment in Galicia and Spain.
