Economics and Complexity: Diverse Schools of Thought, Different Readings

Abstract: The emergence in the field of physics of complex phenomena during the second half of the twentieth century brought about ontological, heuristic and methodological transformations through main fields of knowledge, leading to the emergence of what has been coined as sciences of complexity. This name referrers to a process and not to a determined finished and static reality. It consists not only of the accumulation of conceptual and methodological developments, but also of the way in which it is performed in each specific discipline and the way in which it manifests itself in the common transdisciplinary field shaped by these developments. This article aims at giving an account of the most characteristic features of this renewal, the way it has permeated the economic thinking in the last three decades as well as its main implications on the characteristics of the scientific production, both in conventional economics and heterodox economic thought.
