Abstract: England, with the most advanced agricultural system in Europe, failed to create a national system of agricultural education and research, and stayed behind Germany and other European countries until the late 19th century. Why was the English model so seemingly successful? Contemporary attitudes towards agricultural innovation and science hold the key Hitherto, the chief disseminating and coordinating agencies had been the agricultural societies and large estates, these provided the framework for the discovering, evaluation, and adaptation of new techniques and knowledges, and their diffusion down the farming ladder, from estate home and large tenant farms to peasant smallholdings.
