Abstract:
This study of local power in Galicia during the final stages of the Ancien Régime, identifies the social groups involved, their interrelationships, their resources and the effects of their activities upon the everyday life of the rural population. A broad association of noble “rentiers”, seigneurial agents and parish priest extended their influence throughout the region in a complex network of interdependence based on patronage, kinship and friendship. The paper ends with a study of how the Liberal Revolution transformed the organization and functioning of local power.
