Abstract: This article presents a reconstruction of the evolution of the Spanish rural population during the nineteenth century. From a reconstruction of the demographic growth levels in the rural areas of the Spanish regions, trends and variations of the rural exodus are analysed. The main conclusion is that the Spanish rural exodus began by 1850 due to the crisis of some important activities in the rural traditional world.
