Abstract:
The last decades of the 19th, century saw the rise of organised peasant protest (through the Union movement and electoral activity), characteristic of the capitalist world in the rural areas of Catalonia. However, the traditional forms of protest were alive in the popular culture until the beginning of the 20th century. This was possible because of the unity of Interest among the rabassaires. Their short-term objective was the defence of the rights that they felt entitled to the land they had been working for generations. In this paper some of these traditional forms of popular protest are analysed.
