Abstract: Communications presented at Viii SEHA congress (Salamanca, 1997) were analysed in the plenary session dealing with peasant living standard determinants in the "Ancient Régime". The discussion focused on the possibilities as well as the /imitations that the study on living conditions offers starting from peasantry material culture sources and, in particular, post mortem inventories. The approach to this topic is accomplished by means of estimations on social and territorial differences and their long-term variations. Final/y, the importance of inheritance as a determinant factor in the standards of living is emphasized.
