Abstract:
This article seeks to strongly support the theory that the changes in the distribution of agricultural land ownership between approximately 1850 and 1950 favoured peasant ownership to the detriment of rentier ownership. This theory is examined within the geographical framework of the Baix Empordá region in Catalonia. This article likewise revisits the analytical tools usually applied to the history of land ownership and puts forward the reconstruction of family estates throughout centuries as an alternative or, at least, a complement.
