Abstract: The authors review the historical studies written on La Pampa over last ten years. This extensive rural area is defined in its broadest sense as the region stretching from the south of Brazil to Argentina. The authors highlight some of the characteristics observed during this period: the existence of peasant societies, the role of national and international markets, the ways used to control the rural population, the role of the State ... The analysis provides a succinct appraisal of the similarities and differences between this huge region and other parts of the rural world of Latin America throughout the 19th century.
