El precio del trigo en España (1814-1883)

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to show a Spanish series of monthly wheat prices from July 1814 to June 1883, worked out from the market price lists of several cities. This source was used by newspapers and official publications, and seems to be the basis of nearly all the statistical information on prices in the 19th century. The problems of homogeneity and representativeness of the sample do not seem to have distorted the outcomes, which, as to be expected, agree with the available ones. In the long term, prices showed a sharp drop in 1814/1819 and a sudden increase in 1854/58; while their trend was nearly zero throughout the rest of the period. Serious crisis occurred in 1847, 1856/57 and 1868.
