Abstract:
This article seeks to provide an initial overview of the evolution of Galician animal husbandry during the early Franco years, a period about which little is known. Despite the scarcity and unreliability of the available statistics, most livestock indicators reveal a situation best described as stagnant. Two stages, however, stand out: a pronounced depression in the 1940s followed by a recovery in the 1950s. This pattern was mainly due to incompetent economic policy-making and its consequent impact on demand.
