Abstract: This article has a dual purpose: to assess the potential dowry deeds into order to analyse some variables of peasant society standard of living under the Ancien Régime (wealth and consumption); and to illustrate it, by, studying the dowry deeds of the town of Almendralejo in Extremadura in the 17th century to reveal what was consumed, who consumed certain goods, and how the consumption models change in terms of several established groups according to their agrarian properties and down through the three generations into which this century is divided.
