Abstract: The existence of large estates in Western Andalusia, whose production was destined for market, led to the need to contract large numbers of workers, resulting in an early proletarianization among the majority of the labour population. So high was the number of workers needed to attend the labour demand of those estates, that the local labour market was unable to meet it and it therefore became necessary to contract outsiders. The presence of both local and outsider workers caused labour market segmentation. On the one hand, early-proletarianized local workers carried out the routine tasks on the farms. On the other hand, outsiders, generally humble peasants in the areas where they came from , were used for the operations with greater marginal productivity related to harvesting.
