Abstract:
Raimat emerged as an ambitious colonizing project that after the first fifty years, focused on viticulture and created a holding that is now the biggest in Europe. This paper will show the complexity of this colonizing process noted for spreading to previously uninhabited land and for the major difficulties that this rural property of 3,000 hectares posed. On the other hand, the paper will also show the way in which it was possible to take advantage of this location, namely communications and water supply. The principal aim is to explain how viticulture was progressively implanted there, gaining ground over forestry holdings and other crops in a process which is here considered using previously unpublished data from the company.
