Abstract: This article describes the advances in hydraulic research throughout the last two decades. Four aspects are particularly noteworthy. First, the deep understanding of the evolution and physiognomy of the "traditional" irrigation systems. Second, the evidence of an important methodological shift characterised by the endeavour to provide a context for technological topics and, likewise, for the primacy given to the problem of managing hydraulic resources. Third, the replacement of a purely descriptive analysis of the agrarian structures by an approach enriched by elements from other research disciplines, in order to better understand their possible relations with the technological and managerial options. And finally, the endeavours deployed involving other disciplines, mainly economic and environmental sciences. The carelessness shown regarding the main topics of the 20th century should be noted.
