Abstract:
As a part of the summer course on Last Decade of Spanish Agrarian History held at Águilas (Murcia Region) in September 2000, this article surveys recent research on local powers in Spanish agrarian society since the 18th century. Attention is paid both to the different methodological approaches and the main issues concerning the changing relationship between social classes, the strength of the local community, and the political frame of the rural society. Particular significance is given to some kind of a `communal sphere`, which proved to be an important force acting in very different eras, despite the progress in agricultural individualism and social differentiation.
