Abstract:
This article contains a critical survey of the transformation of animal husbandry in Spain, a sector that has been overlooked by agrarian historiography. After reviewing the literature, the article is structured in three parts taking into account the evolution of the sector in three periods: the missing authoritarian years (1940-1959), of the crisis of the traditional extensive animal husbandry based on native breeds, and the consolidation of the new model of industrial animal husbandry driven by the demand for foreign breeds and the increasing amounts of imported feed (1960-1975); and the years of the crisis in profitability characterized by the progressive exhaustion of the industrial animal husbandry model (1975-1985). In the final section new areas of research are proposed.
