Abstract: Based on the municipal records and documents from Navarra and Castilian Royal archives, we compare two animal husbandry models in the Western Pyrenees during the Late Middle Ages. On the one hand, livestock raising in Guipúzcoa was typically transterminant, based on small radius movements between summer and winter sites, within one valley or its surrounding areas. On the other hand and in the valleys of Aezkoa, Salazar, and Roncal, we find long cycle transhumance, whose winter destinations were either the Bardenas, on the Ebro river banks around Tudela, or the Landas Bordelesas, where both locations were approximately 100 km away from the valleys of origin. The characteristics which differentiate both areas are explained.
