Abstract:
The expansion of Chilean export agriculture between 1850 and 1930 was a transition process towards capitalism by means of owning land. The main interpretations of Chilean agricultural development are discussed in this article along with the expansion of the agrarian frontier, the dissemination of mechanization, the organizational transformation of the hacienda estate system, and, as its direct consequences, the proletarianization of rural workers.
