Abstract: The Italian medieval rural studies have undergone three important changes Iinked to a number 01 key academic works, namely, in the 1960s, Tabacco's research on feudal lordship and Gonti's on the agrarian landscape; in 1973 Toubert's work on Lazio and, finally, Wickham's works in the 19805 and 1990s on rural society and peasant communities. These models have in turn stimulated a wide variety of important studies that have illuminated many aspects of rural society, although with very diverse results across regions. One weakness of Italian medievalism however is the insufficient integration of institutional, economic and archaeological studies.
