De la hipoteca a la desposesión. Subastas judiciales en la Cataluña rural de fines del siglo XIX

Abstract: The objectives of this work are, firstly, to show that in the rural Catalonia the agricultural crisis at the end of the 19th century meant an important increase in the judicial activity related with unpaid debts that often finished in public auction. The counting of affected properties from the announcements of auction published by the courts in the Official Gazette of the provinces of Barcelona and Girona provides some figures —tens of thousands of hectares, thousands of homes— what demonstrate the importance of the phenomenon. Secondly, we examine the relationship between the incidence of the auctions and the agrarian situation, particularly in the wheat and the wine sectors.
