Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze social identities through the study of agricultural associations. At the beginning of the twentieth century some landowners promoted a new agricultural associationism that tried to integrate peasants by offering co-operative services. It was a different kind of associations compared to those that were set up by landlords during the nineteenth century. By focusing on the analysis of agricultural chambers —a kind of associations that was more dynamic in Catalonia than in other Spanish regions— the present article tries to answer the following questions: Why did landowners promote these new associations at the beginning of the twentieth century? What was the contribution of this new associationism to the development of social identities in rural society, and also to the prevention of social conflicts? What was the influence of corporatist identities among peasantry?
