Abstract: This article offers an interpretation of the longer-term evolution of the Argentine agricultural export sector. The paper focuses on grain production, which by the early 20th century had surpassed cattle farming in importance. Three different periods are analysed: the 1880-1930 boom years, the 1930-1960 stagnation years, and the 1960-2010 recovery period, when growth was resumed. Explanatory factors considered to have affected this evolution include world market conditions, a relative scarcity of factors of production, public policies, land tenure arrangements and technological changes.
