Abstract:
The aim of the article is to analyse state intervention as a promoter of institutions for the generation and diffusion of technical knowledge in two regional agro-industries: wine growing in Mendoza and sugar cane production in Tucumán. By means of a historical reconstruction of the evolution of agronomic and experimental stations, and agricultural education schools, we examine the interaction of provincial elites and entrepreneurs with scientific institutions dedicated to applied investigation and the formation of technical personnel. In parallel, we study how problems caused by agro-industrial specialisation were addressed and solved in the discourse of specialists such as oenologists, chemists and agronomists. Our comparative perspective is interconnected with an evolutionary approach to technical change. The contributions of the educational institutions and of learning-by-doing are examined in this study that builds on published and unpublished sources, as well as official archives, specialized journals and periodicals.
