Abstract: The establishment and evolution of property rights and the market for land in a village of Catalonia is here analysed over time by examining various sources such as cabreves, amillaramientos, notarial archives, etc. The mas in the long run was the predominant habitat in this area of the interior. Our thesis is that, after the establishment of an initial structure based on the feudal concession of land to a bishop and its settlement by peasants, in the 15th and 16th centuries land was hoarded by those who possessed the dominium utile of the masos. Many of these peasant families were descendent of those first established. At this point the land market was blocked, but would become dynamic again due to the rabassa morta contract and the possibility of buying and selling dominium utile.
