Abstract:
This paper summarises the major issues that inform the discourse of «food sovereignty», based on a thorough review of the available literature on organizational websites related to the movement (Vía Campesina, GRAIN, and Veterinarians without Borders), various academic articles and official reports by international institutions. The main proposals of food sovereignty are integrated into a broad theoretical context and their overall consistency is discussed. Discourse analysis focuses on economic arguments relating to international trade, the persistence of food crises and the possible advantages of a model of peasant agriculture. We argue that the food sovereignty discourse «paradigm» is constructed in opposition to the dominant economic discourse. Likewise, we identify the main differences between both discourses and the possible inconsistencies or ambiguities of the food sovereignty approach, linking it with several ongoing debates in agrarian history.
