Abstract:
This article explores the impact of mortgage credit on Peru’s agricultural sector between 1840 and 1880. Prior to the creation of mortgage banks, landowners had access to mortgage credit. However, with the creation of mortgage banks in 1866, landowners could get better loan conditions in terms of quantity and maturity dates. In addition, total mortgage credit increased substantially as a result of the creation of mortgage banks. However, the credit boom only lasted a few years. Our work will try to explain the reasons for the decline.
