Abstract: There is a growing interest in the evaluation and measurement of performance of healthcare systems in all developed countries. Measuring and evaluating healthcare system performance is both a theoretical as well as a practical problem with specific characteristics; it is not easy to measure the outputs of the healthcare systems and is not easy to express the outputs in monetary values and the causality between health inputs and outputs is not always certain. This paper defines the possible approaches which are used for measuring and evaluating healthcare systems, discusses the usability of these approaches, and points to some indicators of healthcare performance at the level of international comparison. The paper partially critically reflects selected approaches and highlights the limitations associated with these approaches to measuring and evaluating performance in healthcare systems and it also presents selected aspects of sustainable healthcare in the Czech Republic.
