The Impact of Incentives on Creativity: A Literature Review

N. Beckers, M. Cools and A. Van Den Abbeele

Review of Business and Economic Literature, 2010, vol. 55, issue 4, 463-484

Abstract: This article provides an overview of academic research on how incentives can foster or hinder creative performance. We analyze 22 relevant articles published in high-impact journals over the period 1986-June 2010 and classify the incentives discussed along four important components of incentives: goal-setting, evaluation, reward and feedback. Our analysis points at several research gaps, in the context of which we make suggestions for future research.
