Abstract:
In July 2001, Switzerland has taken up further bilateral negotiations with the European Union. One goal of these negotiations, especially, is a bilateral agreement on cooperation in official statistics guaranteeing the dissemination of euro-compatible data on Switzerland. A domain of special importance is the consumer price index (CPI). Since May 2000, the Swiss CPI is calculated according to a thoroughly revised method ("LIK 2000"). For international comparisons, Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, has developed methodological standards for the calculation of harmonized consumer price indices ("HCPI"). In this paper, it is examined to what extent the new LIK 2000 fulfills these standards.
